Disclaimer: Before you read this, please take in mind that this might be long and we both wrote in this, we hope we won’t confuse you.
Three months since our first music festival together, but the excitement, enthusiasm, and all that mixed emotions that we could think of are still marked in our hearts today. If only we could turn back time, Rock Werchter 2016 definitely is one of those that we will relive over and over again. This is the third phase of our story and the best day out of all, we think.
We have read some comments from our past two blog entries saying that it must be really hard to choose on who to watch and who to let go in this festival, and we agree with that without a doubt! That feeling got stronger during this fourth day, especially Eena, because it seemed like she wanted to watch everyone! But of course in the end we had to choose and these are the ones we did…
It was our first time to really go full day at Werchter, which built up the excitement even more! The first performance we have seen was with Alice on the Roof, if you are not familiar with their band, then now is your time to Google them and listen to some new music today. We were only there for three songs and I (Eena) just sang the whole time or from what we have noticed I made a fool of myself just singing and dancing the entire time.
However, we had to cut our time there, because from The Barn, we had to go rush to Klub C to watch Aurora. Her performance totally blew us away! Actually, for me (Bart), Aurora’s performance truly is one of the best, because her and her whole band surprised us. They were just full of energy the entire time that they made people dance and sing along so easily. And what we loved the most was that yes, Aurora interacted with everyone perfectly.
Next stop was James Bay’s performance, on where we had to walk long again from Klub C to the Main Stage. We did not regret all the change that is rapidly happening, because we both loved each second of Bay’s performance. And I (Bart), have to share this, I think Eena’s favourite detail was that James Bay was wearing a Beyoncé Formation tour shirt (ha)! *fangirl moment (according to her) *
Anyway, with this performance that we have seen, we learned to appreciate Bay’s songs so much. The feels and communication through his songs that he created with us audience created solemnity even in a larger crowd. His words became so serene and sincere, like he is making everyone fall in love with a certain amount of pain again and again.
We then got back to Klub C from the main stage to witness Låpsley’s performance. It started a bit late because of some technical difficulties, but we loved how she managed to speak with her audience while waiting for everything to be fixed. The unforgettable part for us was that we finally saw her perform with her two microphones! We know kind of shallow, but we have been wanting to see that since the time we saw her on the livestream of Coachella (haha).
Going back, we just want to say that Låpsley truly was a gem that you will be addicted to listen to over and over again, because the wholeness of her songs and voice seem to speak to the core of your being that will somehow make you feel some more.
After Låpsley’s performance, we wanted to take a break, but we’ve realised that we might not have a good place to see Florence at the latter part. Which is why before The Last Shadow Puppet’s set, we already went to the main stage and watched them too. For this one, we could only say one thing, Alex Turner is freakin way too classy for this lifetime!
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis were the next ones and it was the second time around for Eena and for her it will never fail to be still so–for the lack of good words to say–amazing! The crowd went wild in a good sense, because the audience participation during this set was so sick! And the duo, definitely created a loving, yet dancing, atmosphere at the main stage.
When their performance came to an end, we already felt that people were flocking around the main stage. We also felt that long weekend was nearing to its end and it is a sad thing, but somehow feeling the fulfilment in us as well, because the long walks were never a joke! Haha, oh anyway, this end part, we both discussed that Eena will fully do the writing because…
This last performance felt like a religious experience for me (Eena), after years and years of waiting, finally, I have seen my all-time favourite band live, and what made it more special was I saw them in one of my favourite places in the world with one of my few favourite people ever during their very last show for their album tour. Florence + the Machine is not only special for me, but they are special for both Bart and I. I even remember watching almost all their performances on YouTube with Bart and wishing that we will be part of Florence’s crowd in the future.
Hearing my favourite songs live during this time, felt like I was being brought to some places and moments in my life that I haven’t even experienced. The whole performance of the band even made me cry, but still scream and sing happily. Florence + the Machine truly brought inspiration by making everyone feel the enchantment from the magic that they have brought to end the entire show. Each words uttered by Florence became a captivating moment that you would want to discover.
I know the feelings were quite vague, but maybe this is just what I want to share. Bart and I just felt so lucky to have finally witnessed them perform live and this time it is outside the gadgets that we were stuck to for ages. It was real and just purely beautiful.
We both know in the future there will be more festivals to come in our lives and more great bands to discover. But as Rock Werchter closed this year with fireworks after Florence + the Machine’s performance, we knew this will always and forever be the most memorable of all.
We hope to see you real soon, Werchter! You have been one of the greatest highlights of our life.
