Over the years, Bangkok has been known to travellers and shoppers from all over the world, it is a city rich with culture and experiences that will completely change or at least show you a developing country's perspective of its wealthy side. Living my whole life in a developing country, it is indeed hard to differentiate our metro area to Bangkok, though one thing is certain, they have better independent bookshops. Khao San Road became our place to discover those, but sadly, due to our short sweet visit in the city we've only been to two of the many bookshops that surround the area. Here are those two and do make a stop in these places in your next trip to Thailand:
Note: We know Khao San Road may not be the cheapest place for a person to shop (or at least that's for us) because just a little bit of advice some shops might even rip your wallet off as this is an incredibly touristy place or we could say a "Westerners' area," if you would love some cheap clothes or souvenirs, do visit Pratunam Market or the malls near it.
Sara Barn Books
If you are on the look for fairly priced secondhand books, then you should visit this bookshop. Sara Barn Book is located in Soi Ram Buttri, an alley between Khao San Road and Rambuttri Alley, and what we love about this place is that they buy and/or trade old books that could definitely help you to continuously pack light if you are a bookworm backpacker staying around the area. Another unique feature of this place is that, if you are done with the book that you've bought from them and you do not need it anymore, you could always return the book/s to their shop and get 50% of what you originally paid.
Do not miss the magazines and handicrafts that they also sell! The place may be small, but there are truly so much to check in and out of the bookshop.
Incredible selection of books, beautiful postcards, great tasting coffee, and a completely relaxing place that you could go to unwind in the middle of your adventure. Yes, Passport Bookshop offers all those! In here, I was also able to buy few books written by Thai authors and also in this shop, I was able to buy nice postcards and even got the chance to mail it via their own cute mailbox.
Once you go here, do not miss the small notes written by the shop's owner, those notes are recommendations and some are just words to make a person smile. Their staff is also nice and is willing to help you to your concerns inside the shop. Passport Bookshop also offers 10% discount on their food and drinks once you purchase a book.
This place might be a long walk for some, especially if you will be coming from Khao San Road and the heat is not cooperating well, but we promise that this is definitely worth a visit!
